Kipepeo Project

The Kipepeo project was set up in 1993 within the grounds of the Gedi ruins, to help farmers around the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest earn a small income. This was to compensate in part for the damage to their crops caused by elephants and baboons. Kipepeo is Swahili for butterfly; the farmers collect butterfly larvae from the project and raise them on forest leaves until they change into pupae, the farmers then sell them back to the project. The pupae are shipped to Europe and North America for live butterfly shows.
